Months after its initial release, Bandai Namco seems hellbent on squeezing as much money as it possibly can from Tekken 8. Not only does the game have seasonal DLC passes β the first is set to offer four additional characters, starting with Eddy next week β but it recently added a microtransaction store, where you can exchange premium currency for cosmetic items.
And now things are about to get even more expensive. Announced during a developer stream, Tekken 8 will be introducing the 'Tekken Fight Pass' with patch 1.03. "During the specified period, players can increase their level by completing daily and weekly missions in online matches, allowing them to obtain various items," reads the official description. It continues: "In the Premium tier, where items are even more luxurious, players can also acquire Tekken Coins, which can be exchanged for various items in the Tekken Shop."
Although the battle pass is tied directly into the aforementioned microtransaction store, this is still a full price release asking for more and more of your money. Going by reactions on social media and sites like Reddit, the announcement hasn't gone down especially well, with players feeling like they're being bled dry by a monetisation model that was never communicated pre-release.
How do you feel about this? Are you at all surprised that Bandai Namco is doing this? Cast a cynical eye over the Tekken Shop in the comments section below.

Oh great, now I have to go and retroactively unenjoy all the fun I had with it when it released.
I'm a bit confused (maybe this is what they're going for). You buy this battle pass with real money for the privilege of competing for items? Sounds like the worst of both worlds.
Also, a bit of a side note, Eddy's out next week already? Unless I missed the release date announcement that crept up fast.
Patch 1.04 will add Ultimate Arcade Mode where it will lock each playthrough behind a 3.50$ paywall. That's a hommage to the original arcade machines.
@Amnesiac Was and still is an excellent fighting game. But Bamco's nonsense is wearing thin.
The good-hearted Bandai Namco taking away enjoyment from the EVIL gaming and Tekken communities:
This is nothing new. SF6 has been doing this since launch. Avoid and it's a non issue. There's plenty game to play, especially if you're casually playing.
Of course it is.
Bought tekken on launch, got the plat in 8 hours and have only played it once since. SF6 is superior imo.
Itβs rare when the patches a game gets makes it worse. Bravo, Bamco!
Well I was thinking about getting this game and now I'm not
At least there is plenty of customization items available out of the box for Tekken though. If it's just more character customization stuff then I don't think it's going to be too big of a deal.
I hop on every now and again, and I play some battles. Or, maybe have a few friends over and we play a few matches between us. Point being, I ignore all the mtx, and I'm not fussed about costumes. This takes nothing away from my enjoyment, and is a practice that Harada said they'd have to adopt going forward. I think it sucks that it's becoming more prevalent, but that speaks more of the state of the industry as a whole.
TEKKEN THE PISS
Find it ridiculous that all of this is being added post-release and none of it was detailed prior to the game's release.
I've noticed that most of games nowadays get screwed with patch 1.3 (or 1.03) ???
Just focus on that and soon you find out best games versions are 1.0, 1.1 or max 1.2
@Deadlyblack But why is anyone surprised though? Tekken 7 was just as bad.
@Czar_Khastik Ohhh how delightfully retro sign me up ! I hope there is a battle pass so I can pay to unlock things that used to be included at launch that would be a massive improvement as free stuff is for peasants and I'm a battle pass gamer, not a filthy casual ! It's so generous of them to be giving us all this new content thank you Bandai Namco now please may I have my gruel I've been a good consumer π
@Deadlyblack Funny how that seems to be a trend now. Dragonβs Dogma 2 comes in hot with unannounced mtx, Tekken starts begging for more, Atlus switches course and has post-game dlc (tho at least theirs gives you more actual STORY CONTENT and not just βhey, fast travel now!β or βhereβs a new hairstyle for your punchy-kicky person!β)
proceeds to play Helldivers 2, where at least microtransactions arenβt repeatedly shoved in our faces
Was already waiting for an ultimate edition down the line with everything including, this just makes it so I don't ever second guess that decision βοΈ
Every fighting game has some kind of bs like this tied to it these days. Very annoying. The game is great but the nonsense on the side definitely isn't needed.
I've said this for years but SEGA, CAPCOM and Bandai can easily give WB, EA and ABK a run for their money in the monetisation *****.
Gamers and Journalists have long chosen to bury their head in the sand when it comes to the Japanese companies though and they let it get this far and as a person who only buys their games on sale I can only say "y'all deserve it".
Ahhh... Remember when all you had to do to unlock extra fighters and outfits was beat the game?
Those were the good ol' days.
Adding this post-release is shady.
They learned from Mortal Kombat

@dskatter thats not really how it work, you cant admonish Dragon's Dogma for MTX then praise Helldivers for habing them but "not shoving it in your face" just because you enjoy the game more. Helldivers MTX is FAR more visible than DD2 and im genuinely confused why you think it isnt
The random items in Tekken have been around for a while and, honestly, totally ruin the experience for me. I wish they weren't there at all and there were, instead, several good costumes for characters.
But I wouldn't pay a single penny for those costumes anyway. They should be free or unlockable as part of the game.
This is a fully priced game that doesn't warrant extra monetisation like this. The DLC characters are fine. Extra maps and features, sure. But coins and costumes? Scam.
@HONOTO I'll brag about what I want to, thank you.
***** you Bamco
@Korgon They are testing the waters nexr release tjet will implement everything from day one people are so naive poor new generation of gamers its getting worse and worse.
Simply not buying any of their games again. I have too many games to play as is, those who exploit mtx dont deserve my money and will simply never get it again. Its a shame, but I can live without Street Fighter or Tekken, both of which were far more relevant in the past anyway....
@Flaming_Kaiser
I don't know, fighting games are undeniably considered GaaS games to me at this point. Most fighting game makers only release one fighter for the entire generation of consoles these days. There is simply no way they are going to not try to make some money on microtransactions over the course of 6-8 years of support.
Now there is an argument to be made that they should be Free to Play then and there are some fighters out there starting to play around with that idea like Granblue and MultiVersus. However the big boys of the FGC (SF, MK, Tekken) all also offer big budget offline mode as well which take considerable resources to produce. I doubt you get Tekken 8's story mode or SF6's World Tour mode with a Free to Play version of those games.
So it's a bit more complex than this just being the work of greedy publishers in my opinion. Don't get me wrong I'd love it if they just patched in all these new cosmetics for free but I also know that doesn't make business sense. We haven't had a Helldivers 2 in the FGC that has figured out how to do microtransactions without angering people yet but maybe some day!

@HONOTO Not antsy at all. Just responding to what you wrote. Do you need help with any trophies by chance? Im pretty good at getting them.
I just wait for the final edition of the game to hit 20 bucks anyway.
